In the heart of the Luberon and the Regional nature park, the town of Apt (from Apta Julia), was founded by the Romans, who, by way of the Via Domitia, first developed a civilised settlement here back in the 1st century BC. Apt, surrounded by lavender fields, cherry trees, vineyards and numerous ochre quarries, is a true delight for the senses. What to see, what to visit: the subprefecture building, formerly the residence of the bishops of Apt; the cathedral Sainte-Catherine (now a protestant temple); the cathedral Sainte-Anne (built in the 12th and 13th centuries on the remains of an older construction); the Maison du Parc du Luberon (which provides information on the local wildlife); visits to the local candied fruit producer (with a boutique open all year round, from Monday to Saturday, 9am - noon and 2pm – 6pm. Closed on bank holidays); visit of an ochre manufacturer (all year round, by prior arrangement).
