The Cistercian abbey of Sénanque is in the Vaucluse département of Provence. Surrounded by lavender fields, it is just a few
kilometres from the superb village of Gordes and the Roussillon ochres. The abbey was founded in
1148 by monks from the Vivarais, and whilst it was based on the Cistercian model, it integrated some
specifically regional aspects.
The month of July is an especially good time to visit the abbey, as that is when the lavender fields are
in full bloom, filling the air with their fragrant aromas.
