During the fourteenth century the Popes made this village their summer residence, and planted vines in and around it. Today Châteauneuf du Pape is famous throughout the world for the quality of its wines. You can wander through the village's narrow streets, where you will be welcomed into the many cellars to taste the superb range of vintages on offer. Châteauneuf also presents truly fascinating historical points of interest, notably the remains of the Popes' castle and the superb views it commands over the Rhône valley, the many narrow intertwining cobbled streets and the numerous fountains spread throughout the village - true godsends during the summer months - and the chapel of Saint-Théodoric.

Provencal market : Friday mornings
Festivities : Winemakers feast in April (Saint Marc), blessing of the vines, designation of the best millésime. Saint's day festival (fête votive) on the first Sunday in July. Festival of the vendanges during the second fortnight in September. The brotherhood of the Confrérie vineuse "I'Echansonnerie" holds ceremonies at the castle. Every two years, there is a Cenacle, organised by the oldest wine cellars, with poetry awards. Numerous cultural and sporting events take place throughout the year.
