Perched atop a hill, some ten kilometres from the motorway, Castillon du Gard is an ideal starting place from where to explore the Gard, especially Nîmes and Uzès, and Provence. The village retains many remnants from its rich past – you can discover some of the walls of the old ramparts, the ancient watch tower, cobbled streets, a windmill, a Romanesque chapel and the century-old olive trees on the main square. Nature lovers can go for breathtaking hikes in the Gorges du Gardon or, a bit further away, in the Cévennes or on Mont Ventoux.
