The region
The area’s many assets will charm you. The historical wealth is impressive: the Romans occupied the area from the first century BC and left behind many monuments (Vaison la Romaine, Orange) and the ruins of a few towns; the Catholic Popes had their headquarters here through the XIVth century leaving behind Avignon palaces and bishop mansions. Important cultural exchanges have continued ever since with other regions of France and Europe. Also note the cistercien abbey beautifully located in an breathtaking isolated valley.
